The preferred name is the European one, Maria Callas, the opera singer, because it’s quicker to write and is indicative of the stature of the rose in bloom. Large, cupped deep pink to light red blooms are borne on a tough, spreading plant with leathery dark green foliage that’s virtually impervious to disease. A great rose for the novice because it’s virtually indestructible and has a strong, old rose fragrance that everyone expects when they stick their nose in a bloom. Flower Size: 5-6″. Fragrance: Strong. Hybridizer: Meilland, 1968.
